Who needs the validation of social media when you have a real, live human boyfriend validating you all the time? For a little while, it was enough. I had never met anyone like Jay, who was so kind and so nurturing, such a true-blue nerd, who lavished me with attention as if I hung the moon. One day I logged onto Myspace to find a message in my in-box from the account belonging to a magazine called XY. It was a popular underground gay magazine based in Los Angeles; I’d seen it at the newsstand I loved in New York, although it wasn’t the kind of thing you could find in Texas. The note said:

Hi Colton, We came across photos of you and your boyfriend Jay and wondered if it would be possible to shoot you both when we visit Austin, Texas. Let me know if that would interest you. We would just need parental signatures for you since we know you’re not yet eighteen. Hope all is well—XY
